Personal development, health and physical education

Personal development, health and physical education (PDHPE) is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.

According to the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), students are expected to participate in PDHPE for between 1.5 and 2.5 hours per week in Kindergarten to Year 6.

PDHPE provides students with opportunities to explore issues that are likely to impact on the health, safety and wellbeing of themselves and others – now and in the future. Students also participate in challenging and enjoyable physical activity, improving their capacity to move with skill and confidence.

Mortdale has a very active school-wide fitness program. Kindergarten to Year 2 students participate in dance and fitness twice a week and sport once a week whilst Years 3 to Year 6 participate in a four day a week fitness program which incorporates games, dance, skipping, health lessons and fitness training for carnivals and sport. Friday sport for Years 3 to 6 involves all students rotating through a variety of sports, including softball, volleyball, soccer, hockey and t-ball. House teams compete with one another to be the champion house team.

All students also participate in a term-long gymnastics program conducted by an external professional gymnastics training company.

Each year the school organises school swimming, cross country and athletics carnivals. Students are encouraged to try out for district teams such as soccer and rugby league.

Every year non-swimmers or students who require additional swimming practice have the opportunity to attend an intensive 10 day swimming program at a local swimming centre.
