Extra-curricular activities

Students at Mortdale Public School participate in a variety of activities. We encourage our students in academic, cultural and sporting areas to develop them as whole people. In addition to this, additional enrichment programs are available to students.

Some of our programs include:

  • English, science, mathematics competitions

  • band - junior and senior bands

  • choir - junior and senior choirs

  • dancing - ballroom and hip hop dance programs.

  • environmental programs - recycling and composting

  • gifted and talented enrichment programs - tournament of minds; media studies groups including regional film festivals; Georges River Network Regional gifted and talented programs; Mindquest

  • Interschool sport - Primary School Sports Association, knockout competitions, gala days

  • Premier's Reading Challenge and Premier's Sport Challenge

  • public speaking

Sports

Our students play a variety of sports, learning team work as well as ball skills, flexibility and agility. In specific sports such as gymnastics students are instructed by external providers.

We hold three sports carnivals each year - swimming, cross-country and athletics. Students participating in these school events may qualify for the district, regional and then state carnivals.

Our students participate in inter-school sport through primary school sports association (PSSA), Sydney region athletics, swimming events and gala days.

Various sport clinics are additionally held throughout the year such as our got game program.

Our Swimming school program is offered to students in Year 2 to 6. During this program, qualified swimming instructors are employed to teach students water safety and swimming skills. This program precedes the school Swimming Carnival.

Sports carnivals

Sports carnivals provide students with the opportunity to participate and have fun in sporting activities that they may not have participated in before.

The swimming carnival is held in Term 1 annually, open to all Students ages 8 and above.

The cross country carnival is usually held in Term 2 each year. Students from 8 years of age onwards are eligible to compete in the school cross-country event.

Our athletics carnival is held over two events track carnival and the field carnival. Primary students (ages 8-13 years) participate in track and field events including running, discus, shot-put, high jump and long-jump. Students also have the opportunity to participate in tunnel ball and tug-of-war competitions throughout the carnival. At the same time, infants students (Kindergarten to Year Two) participate in sport activities that may include running, jumping, throwing and balancing.

Band

Students in these bands have the opportunity to play flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone,trumpet, trombone, baritone, keyboard, guitar, bass guitar and tuned and untunedpercussion. This program encompasses tutoring sessions with professional tutors as well and the conducting of the ensemble by our music specialist teacher. The group performs at many school and community events as well as entering in band festivals, where their high level of performance has been officially recognised.

Choir

Our junior choir consists of all Year 2 students. The junior choir learns and performs a variety of songs throughout the year. From this choir Mortdale Public School's performance choir is selected.

Students in Years 3 - 6 have the opportunity to belong to the Mortdale Public School senior choir. This group of dedicated students rehearse weekly and performs at a variety of school and community events as well as participating annually in the St George performing arts festival.

Musical

Each year Mortdale Public School presents a school musical. Students from Years 3 - 6 are invited to audition for the musical and those who are successful work many hours in rehearsals throughout the year to perfect their performances. Other students are involved in stage and costume design for the production.

Dance performance 

Dancing is an essential part of the Kindergarten to Year 6 curriculum. Genres including ballroom and hip hop, popular dances, cultural dances, movement to music and drama is incorporated in the general teaching program of all grades. 

Dance sport 

Mortdale Public School achieved overall champions in the dancesport challenge in 2007 and 2008. Dancesport is a ballroom dancing competition including tango, jive, salsa and cha-cha. In 2009, Mortdale again competed in the dancesport challenge at Sydney sports centre at Homebush. We achieved a first place in tango and jive and third place in salsa.

Hip hop 

In 2009 Mortdale formed its own hip hop group of 15 students. The group trained for 10 weeks after school and during lunch breaks. The group was entered in the McDonald's Sydney Eisteddford 2009 which was held at the University of New South Wales. In this category, our hip hop group achieved 2nd place against performing arts schools. Quite a feat! They were also invited to perform at the dance of champions Eisteddford against all winners of events at the Eisteddford.
