About our school

Research reveals that teacher quality is the most important factor in students achieving their potential.

Mortdale Public School has an enrolment of 405 students including 1% Aboriginal and/orTorres St Islander and 70% non English speaking background.

The school implements quality future focused programs and students are encouraged to be critical and creative thinkers. The school is committed to ensuring that every student is known, valued and cared for through a suite of well being programs built around positive behaviour for learning. The parent community highly values education and is actively involved in school programs. Students are provided with many opportunities to participate in creative arts, debating, public speaking and sport.

Mortdale Public School's teaching team is committed to continuous learning and professional development. This enables our teachers to learn, share and create innovative, engaging and enjoyable programs for our students. Our focus is always to instil the principles of quality learning in our students - deep knowledge and understanding, problem-solving and higher-order thinking, using metalanguage to communicate about learning, engaging students through a learning environment with clear criteria for success and high expectations of performance, supporting students and providing them with strategies to regulate their own behaviour and interact with others, ensuring that all that we do has significance and relevance to students by being strongly connected to their background, experience and other learning.

Our education program focuses on:

  • matching the curriculum to the needs of our students
  • preparing students for National Testing, as part of the Government's requirements
  • providing opportunities for extension and challenge, as well as special programs for students with additional learning needs
  • developing programs that foster the values and attitudes that create a 'community' and encourage the health and well-being of all students.

We provide learning experiences in:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Human society and its environment
  • Science and technology
  • Creative and performing arts
  • Personal development, health and physical education

Our purpose-built computer laboratory has enough computers for individual students in most classes. This has the advantage of ensuring that each student has hands-on experience in technology and research activities.

Our library is also equipped with modern computer facilities to provide additional opportunities for integrating technology with the curriculum, across subjects. It also has a wide range of reading and literacy resources for students from Kindergarten to Year 6.

The creative student is not overlooked, though. At Mortdale Public School we offer a range of music, performance and dancing programs including junior and senior choir, band, junior and senior dance and ballroom dancing, amongst other activities.

Our sports program provides opportunities for our students to be involved in various sporting activities and programs at school and with other local schools through the public schools sports association (PSSA) program.

Leadership is fostered through our student representative council program. Students from Year 1 to Year Six are voted as representatives of their class and these students identify and raise issues of concern to the students for discussion with the school leadership team. Other leadership opportunities include house and school captains and vice captains.

We are very fortunate to have enormous support from our Parents and Citizens Association, who assist with a variety of events. Please see out P&C page for more information about the P&C.

Our school strives to provide a safe, secure learning environment for students. We recognise that students learn in a variety of ways and at differing rates. Learning programs are designed to meet individual needs. Our belief that learning is a life-long process has led us to encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning. Our school enjoys strong community interest, involvement and support.

School song

Mortdale Our school (written by Steve Wood in 1996)

Verse 1

Since 1888 our school has taught us right from wrong, its name is Mortdale Public School, its the place where we belong, now children from around the world are joining in our song - Oh! Mortdale - we care

Mortdale - we learn to share

Mortdale - we're there for you

Chorus

Work hard, play fair - that's what we aim to do, to always do our very best like Mortdale, our school. Work hard, play fair - that's what we aim to do, to always do our very best like Mortdale, our school.

Versus 2

Our school is very beautiful, we've lots of grass and trees, we'll leave the school with lasting friends and happy memories, As we look back upon these years we'll share a lifetime bond - Oh! Mortdale - we care,

Mortdale - we learn to share,

Mortdale - we're there for you.

Chorus

Verse 3

'We are the children of Mortdale, just see how proud we stand, we face towards the future under the Australian flag, we carry the example of the lesson we are taught - Oh!

Mortdale- we care,

Mortdale - we learn to share,

Mortdale - we're there for you.

Chorus
