Science

Science and technology is mandatory for all students from Kindergarten to Year 6.

Science

Science and technology units within our school aim to develop student confidence, competence and responsibility. Through planned activities students gain an enriched view of not only themselves but of society, the environment and the future. The high interest level of the units stimulates enthusiasm and encourages life-long learning.

Some units that students interact with include:

  • what for lunch?
  • getting about
  • kids care
  • miniworlds
  • out in space
  • a look inside

Information communication technology

At Mortdale Public School we believe that Information technology and computers (ICT) is not just a complement to all other subject area, but one of the tools for engaging students in new ways of learning. ICT is integrated into our teaching program through the curriculum.

We have outstanding computer facilities including a computer laboratory with 28 networked PC's, 19 networked PC's in the library and at least one networked workstation in each classroom throughout the school. Students and teachers have internet access which enables them to access global information to complement their learning. A state of the art multimedia fileserver distributes reference and educational titles. Access to the school's library catalogue is available in all parts of the school. Internet access is also widely available.

As part of the Department of Education connected classrooms program, our dedicated open learning room will be outfitted with an interactive whiteboard, camera and projector to enable students to connect with other schools and experts and participate in online field trips, all around the world.

Through fundraising efforts and the support of the Parents and Citizens' Association (P&C), we are also in the process of installing interactive whiteboard in three additional classrooms, with the aim to extend this new technology to all classrooms by 2012.

Our additional technology resources include:

  • laser printers
  • scanners
  • digital still and video cameras
  • concept keyboards

Some of the ways our students use technology include:

  • researching and gathering information for discussion, writing and projects
  • publishing and illustrating their writing
  • recording progress on activities
  • making multimedia art and presentations
  • creating digital stories, including sound, video and animation
  • composing music
