Our Kindergarten transition program

At Mortdale Public School, we place great importance on ensuring children have a welcoming and successful beginning to their school journey. Our transition program assists students and their families by collaborating with parents, carers, early childhood centres, and educators to help every child feel comfortable and prepared for Kindergarten.

Our school transition program includes:

Connections with Preschools
We maintain professional dialogue with educators from local preschools that our students attend. Additionally, our Learning Support team carries out on-site observations when necessary to ensure each child’s smooth transition.
Visits from Local Preschools
We welcome local preschools to visit our school throughout the year, providing extra opportunities for transition that create a personalised experience and strengthen early bonds between families and the school community.
Parent Information Sessions and Transition Mornings
Over three days in early Term 4, our incoming Kindergarten students participate in classroom activities while their parents attend informative sessions.
Mini Meets
These sessions allow future Kindergarten students to interact and get acquainted through enjoyable developmental play, while parents and carers have the opportunity to meet and build connections with one another.

Working in partnership, we create a positive and supportive start to school, ensuring each child feels happy and self-assured as they begin their educational journey.

Before your child starts Kindergarten

Enrolment interview

Before your child begins, all families meet with our principal. This is a time to share:

  • medical conditions or allergies
  • learning support needs
  • family circumstances that may affect your child’s start

We want every child to feel safe, supported and included in school life.

Kindergarten orientation and information sessions

Our orientation sessions help children:

  • meet teachers and classmates

  • explore classrooms and playgrounds

  • practise simple routines

  • Parents and carers join information sessions to learn about daily schedules, uniforms, lunches and communication. If you need an interpreter, let us know.

Our orientation program dates

We invite your child to attend our orientation program, this is a great opportunity for them to begin making friends and become familiar with their new school.

  3. Wednesday 11 November 2026

What to expect in Kindergarten

Learning and development

Kindergarten follows the NSW curriculum. Children build early skills in literacy, numeracy, creative arts, health and physical activity, science and technology. Learning through play also supports social, emotional and academic growth.

Daily routines

Children learn routines such as morning arrival, snack and lunch breaks, lining up, using bubblers and moving safely around the school. Teachers guide children as they settle in, but practising at home helps.

Best Start Assessment

At the start of the year, all Kindergarten children take part in the Best Start Assessment. This is a friendly, one-on-one activity where teachers learn about your child’s literacy and numeracy skills. It is not a test and needs no preparation.
